Getting started

Every beer you log costs a mile. Runs from Apple Health pay it back. On first launch the App asks for permission to read your running workouts from Health; that's how it knows you ran. Then tap + Beer whenever you have one, go for a run, and watch the tab get paid.

Frequently asked questions

My run isn't showing up.
Check that Beer Debt can read your workouts: open the iOS Settings app → HealthData Access & DevicesBeer Debt → make sure Workouts is on. Beer Debt syncs each time you open it, so open the App after your run. Only workouts that ended after you installed Beer Debt count; the books open at zero.

Will it tell me when a run counts?
Yes. Turn on Notify me when a run lands in Settings (the App asks after you connect Apple Health). When a running workout is saved, Beer Debt applies it in the background and sends a notification with what it paid. If nothing shows up, check the iOS Settings app → NotificationsBeer Debt, and that Background App Refresh isn't off for the App.

Is there a widget?
Yes. Long-press your Home Screen, tap +, and search for Beer Debt: small and medium sizes, plus Lock Screen widgets. It shows your tab and updates whenever a beer or run lands.

Can I get a weekly recap?
Turn on Weekly summary in Settings and pick the day and time. You'll get one notification a week with your beers, miles, and where the tab stands.

I deleted a workout in Health.
It comes off the books on the next sync, and any beers it paid go back on your tab. Beer Debt keeps the user honest in both directions.

Can I remove a run without deleting it from Health?
Yes. Swipe left on the run under The Ledger → Runs. It stops counting here, whatever it paid goes back on your tab, and it won't be imported again. The workout itself stays in Apple Health.

Why didn't my walk or bike ride count?
Only running workouts pay for beer. Walking, cycling, hiking, and everything else are ignored on purpose. Daily steps don't count either, so a walk to the bar can't pay for the beer you drink there.

I forgot to log a beer last night.
Tap + Beer, then Forgot one earlier? Change the date on the confirmation screen. You can also open any beer in The Ledger and change its date. Beers can be dated back up to 30 days, and the books are redone as if it had been logged then.

I tapped + Beer by mistake.
Tap Didn't mean that? Remove it on the confirmation screen, or swipe left on the beer in The Ledger.

How does interest work?
By default a beer costs 1 mile, and after 24 hours it grows 10% a day until you run it off. You can change the miles per beer, the interest rate, how often it compounds, and the grace period in Settings. Changes apply from then on; nothing already on the books is recalculated.

What is credit?
Run more than you owe and the extra miles are banked as beers, up to a cap (3 beers by default). Your next beers come out of credit before creating new debt. Credit slowly expires, so drink it or lose it.

Does it need an internet connection?
No. Beer Debt works entirely offline. Nothing is sent to a server.

Is my data private?
Yes. Beer Debt doesn't collect personal data, never writes to Apple Health, and keeps your ledger on your device. See our Privacy Policy.

How do I start over?
Your ledger lives on your device. Deleting and reinstalling the App clears it and reopens the books at zero.
